Woman licked, kicked in the face, ticketed after climbing over giraffe enclosure

Posted: Updated:
MADISON, Wis. (KMSP) -

A 24-year-old California woman climbed over the fence of a giraffe exhibit at a Madison, Wis. zoo, and in return, she received a lick, a kick in the face and a $700 ticket. Only two of those items were from the giraffe.

Police said Amanda Hall of St. Luis Obispo, Calif. was visiting friends in Madison and climbed over the fence of a giraffe enclosure at Henry Vilas Zoo near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Wally the 12-foot-tall giraffe, licked her, but then turned and kicked her in the face. She was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but police ticketed her for harassing zoo animals, a $686 fine. Zoo officials noted giraffes are capable of killing lions.

According to the police report, Hall told officers she climbed into the enclosure because she loves giraffes. Hall told the Los Angeles Times she needed at least 10 stitches below her lower lip after the incident -- she also said she had easily stepped over a 3-foot barrier and didn't climb the second fence. She contends that after stepping over the first barrier, the giraffe put his head through the gap in the fence and she plans to fight the citation.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

The massive steel beams may be going up at the future home of the Vikings, but it'll still be a couple of years before they can stay there. In the interim, they'll be at TCF Bank stadium -- and it's changing to welcome them.
