Breastfeeding Mothers Hold A Nurse-In Protest In Beverly Hills

Posted: Updated:

They called it a "nurse-in". Dozens of women and their babies or toddlers breastfeeding in public to show that it should not be seen as obscene, or something to hide.

The women showed up at the Beverly Hills Anthropologie store, after reading in the online mommy blogs that a mom was asked to hide when she tried to breast feed her baby at the store a couple of days ago. The mom posted a message and the other mothers responded.

One by one, they showed up in front of the store on South Beverly Drive. The traffic stopping to check out the convergence of people, child carriers, strollers, and children, with quite a few people asking the reporters if there was a celebrity in sight.

The mother entered the store, where managers actually brought out several extra chairs so the moms could breast feed comfortably. In a statement, the store management said "we are disappointed to hear of the unfortunate experience that occurred in our Beverly Hills store. As accompany comprised of hundreds of mothers, which seeks to put the customer first, we celebrate women in all their life stages. Given our staff's dedication to,providing exceptional customer service, we welcome this as an opportunity to enhance our customer experience by providing further training and education for,our staff. Or aim is that all women -all mothers- be comfortable in our stores and delight in their relationship with Anthropologie."

We asked shoppers coming out of the store, including a few men, if they were offended by the nurse-in. None said they were upset, neither did shoppers at the stores next to the protest.

After the protest, moms were eager to talk, saying they were happy with what they had accomplished: making a point.
