Samsung Announces The Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Edge and Gear VR

Posted: Updated:
Samsung held their big Fall event today, dubbed Samsung Unpacked. And with the event came the official announcement of three products: the much anticipated Note 4, the Note Edge and something very interesting, the Gear VR. I have all the details straight from Samsung below.

The Galaxy Note 4 has been rumored for some time and many of the specs leaked, or speculated on, online for just as long. What Samsung released today looks pretty good with the addition of the metal edges we saw on their Galaxy Alpha. The biggest change to the Note 4 from the Note 3 is the screen. This year you get 5.7 inches of Quad HD Super AMOLED awesomeness at a resolution of 2560 x 1440. That works out to 515 pixels per inch. Other changes include a bump in battery from 3000mAh to 3220mAh, 16 Mega pixel rear and 3.7 Mega pixel cameras, up from 13 and 2 mega pixels respectively and a heart rate monitor like that on the Galaxy S5. Samsung has also brought a UV sensor to the Note 4 and fingerprint scanner. The phone will ship with Android 4.4 and is going to launch on T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular. You'll be able to pick one up in Charcoal Black, Frost White, Bronze Gold, and Blossom Pink.

Samsung is known for trying a lot of new and different things (see the Galaxy Round) and this year is no different. Along with the announcing the Note 4, they've also introduced the Galaxy Note Edge and the Gear VR. The Note Edge is almost spec for spec the same as the Note 4 except for the Edge screen. Similar to a stock ticker, the Edge has a 5.6” screen which ditches the right-side bezel in favor of the screen covering that side and giving a stock ticker-like screen which allows you to quickly access your most frequently used apps, alerts and more, even when the cover is closed. They've also set it up so that you can even receive notifications on the Edge screen while watching videos without stopping the vids. No release date has been announced beyond “later this year” and you'll only be able to pick this one up in Charcoal Black and Frost White.

The Gear VR is probably the most interesting of the announcements this morning! Though I can't wait to get my hands on all of these devices, I'm really eager to test the Gear VR. The makers of the Oculus Rift teamed up with the folks at Samsung to make this mobile virtual reality device.“Samsung Gear VR goes far beyond expectations of how mobile technology can be used to consume content, and is a powerful representation of the progressive innovation of the Gear series,” said JK Shin, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to have partnered with Oculus VR to bring this incredibly immersive mobile content experience to consumers.” The Gear VR runs completely off of the Galaxy Note 4 and brings full 360 degree 3D video to the mobile experience, along with immersive gaming. The VR has a 96 degree field of view, has an accelerometer, gyrometer, magnetic and proximity sensors, touch pad, back button and volume keys. It connects to your Note 4 via the microUSB port. Samsung says that it will come with some pre-loaded content to show off the gadget:

  • As part of the Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron partnership with Samsung, Gear VR users will gain exclusive access to Tony Stark's Lab inside the all new Avengers Tower.
  • IMAX offers samples of Hollywood and documentary films in a virtual theatre with Samsung Gear VR – the next best thing to a live IMAX experience.
  • DreamWorks VR from DreamWorks Animation allows Samsung Gear VR users to interact and laugh with DreamWorks characters and content in a whole new way like never before.
  • Legendary's Pacific Rim Jaeger Pilot is an immersive content experience that puts viewers at center of the action with Samsung Gear VR.
  • Cirque du Soleil Media presents a 360 live-action 3D VR experience, featuring an act from Zarkana filmed by Felix & Paul Studios for Samsung Gear VR.
  • M-GO Advanced, a new paradigm for digital video virtual reality applications, offers an unmatched interactive search and discovery of the latest premium movie and TV show content with Samsung Gear VR.
  • Vevo offers more than 100,000 HD music videos, live concert events and original programming that can be enjoyed in an immersive, full-screen theater experience on Samsung Gear VR.
  • Protocol Zero (working title) from DENA enables Samsung Gear VR players to infiltrate enemy grounds undetected in blackout conditions with hi-tech optics including night vision, X-ray vision, and thermal vision.
No pricing has been officially announced for these devices yet and as usual, check back here for full reviews as they become available.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
